New Medicaid Commission
Established In late May, following
a request from Congress, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services announced that a Medicaid Commission would be
established to do two things: 1) recommend ways to cut $10
billion from the program over five years (by September 1,
2005); and 2) propose long-term solutions to address
Medicaid’s escalating costs (by December 31,

National Health Care Coalition
Releases Cost and Savings Estimates for System-wide Reform
Scenarios In July 2004, the
National Coalition on Health Care, a nonpartisan alliance of
organizations working for the achievement of comprehensive
health care reform, released a report called Building a Better
Health Care System: Specifications for Reform. In May 2005,
the Coalition presented economic projections for implementing
any one of the four system-wide reform scenarios outlined in
